Slow and steady eventually reaches the finish line

I'm not a good runner. I'm still a newbie, still find it difficult to go fast and still haven't run anything longer than 10k so far. Signing up for the half-marathon was really a whim and a promise to myself that I'd keep training after the Sun Run 10K next week. Every time I go out for a run I still find it really, really hard. I'm not at that point yet where running is fun. But I still go out and do it. Having a training plan is really key -- it was a Monday, I had to go for a run today!

My boyfriend ran with me this weekend, and even though I rant and complain about how hard it is and how much I suck he reminded me that this time last year, when he occasionally accompanied me on my Couch to 5K runs, I was way slower and could not run nearly as long as I'm running now. Even when we busted out our bicycles for the first time this season, I was biking so much faster than I did last summer. Basically, I'm healthier. So even though I moan and complain, I'm doing a good thing. It's okay that I'm super slow -- I'm faster than I was before, and I'll keep getting better.

  1. We spend so much time looking at how far we still have to go that we forget how far we've come. I too have signed up for the half and am still not finding the love of running. I did the Sun Run in 58 and I am scared to death of the half.

  2. My Sun Run time was an hour and 11, so you're doing better than me! I'm terrified of the half too, but I'm sure we can both do it!

  3. Your doing great and your time was good in the Sun Run. I am trying not to focus so much on times but just going out and getting it done with a few more km each run. Today was 12 km in 1 hour 15 minutes. Pretty slow but more distance than last week. I struggle right now with runner's knee and am going to visit physio next week. How has your running been these past two weeks?

  4. My running's been okay. Just trying to add about 2K to my long runs each weekend. My 12K time was about 9 minutes more than yours, so I think you're doing swell! I also have an appointment with a sports medicine doctor in early May -- running has made me aware of some knee and hip pain on my right side. Hope both of us will feel better soon!

  5. I wanted to share with you the success I have been having with the foam roller. I roll twice a day and I roll before each run, instead of stretching. I stretch after my runs and then roll again. I know, how much time do you spend rolling??? Lots, but what a difference it has made for me. My legs have never felt so loose and I must say the husband has commented on how they look slimmer. You might want to try it. Just thought I'd share. I hope all is well for you. I look forward to hearing more of how your training is going.
    Best wishes,
